From beautiful, scenic walks around Jumbles Reservoir, to grabbing a bargain at the famous Bury Markets, there’s something for everyone.
Jumbles Reservoir Walk
Just five minutes from the pub, Jumbles Reservoir offers peaceful country paths and open water views. It’s perfect for a leg stretch before your Sunday roast. You can spot ducks, swans and the odd fisherman along the way, and there is a small café halfway round for a brew. Free parking and dog-friendly paths make it ideal for a pre- or post-meal wander. Take your boots if it’s been raining, as some areas can get muddy.

Peel Tower, Holcombe Hill
A ten-minute drive brings you to Peel Tower on Holcombe Hill. The short but steep climb is rewarded with expansive views over Bury, Ramsbottom and beyond. The tower commemorates Sir Robert Peel, a local lad and the founder of modern policing. It’s a great photo spot, especially on a clear day. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for pictures.

Bury Market
About 15 minutes into town, Bury Market is a northern institution with over 370 stalls selling everything from black pudding to handbags. The atmosphere is lively, with plenty of local characters and occasional free samples. Covered sections ensure it’s a good destination whatever the weather. Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest and most vibrant times to visit.

Burrs Country Park
Ten minutes from the pub, Burrs Country Park runs alongside the River Irwell and is perfect for families or anyone seeking fresh air. Riverside walks, wildlife trails and a miniature railway make it an easy-going day out. The park connects to the River Irwell Sculpture Trail for longer walks, and dogs are welcome throughout. Keep an ear out for the East Lancashire Railway steam whistle as trains pass through the park.

East Lancashire Railway – Bury Bolton Street Station
The East Lancashire Railway is about 15 minutes away and offers a touch of nostalgia with heritage steam trains running through the Irwell Valley. Regular events include themed trains, gin evenings and family-friendly days out. On-site facilities include a café and a museum, making it an easy afternoon excursion. Timetables vary, so it’s best to check in advance.

Ramsbottom Town
Around 10 minutes from The Red Lion, Ramsbottom is ideal for browsing independent shops, bakeries and local delis. The town is known for its Chocolate Festival and the world famous Black Pudding Throwing Contest. It’s a pleasant place for a slow post-pub stroll.
